Our Board of Directors
Our Board of Directors consists of a team of dedicated, talented and caring individuals who work together to achieve our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need.
DeeAnn Smith – President
DeeAnn Smith is the daughter of our late founder, Glenda Smith. DeeAnn has been fortunate enough to work with many different trainers learning various disciplines of riding as well as working a season at Tampa Bay Downs racetrack to learn the “racehorse” aspect of the Thoroughbred breed to help make the off-the-track transition as smooth as possible. DeeAnn graduated from Saint Leo University with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and is now pursuing a career with the Tampa Police Department as a police officer. It was Glenda’s life-long ambition to have a thriving horse rescue, so DeeAnn is fully committed to keeping her dream alive.
Vice President & Liaison to Tampa Bay Downs
Jack was born in Louisville, Kentucky into a family deeply embedded in the thoroughbred racing industry. Jack’s father, Logan, spent 60 years in the horse business primarily as an owner and trainer, following a short stint as a jockey in the 1920’s. As a youngster, Fischer would spend weekends helping with the horses and continued to do so through high school. After 10 years in an office job following college, Jack couldn’t resist the urge to enter back into the horse business, becoming a full time owner and trainer in 1972 and spent 20 years following the circuit from his home base at Churchill Downs, racing primarily in the Midwest. After a very successful career Jack retired in 1992 finishing as a racing official at Tampa Bay Downs. Jack’s love of horses is contagious and he is a wonderful asset to our team here at Equestrian Inc.
Carol Burnell – Secretary
Carol is from Rockford, Illinois and spent much of her childhood watching her father’s Thoroughbreds race at tracks from Arlington Park in Chicago to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. It was a natural transition for her to enter the horse show world with a series of American Saddlebreds. Her favorite horse was Chief’s Treasure. He was a handsome 3 gaited gelding who was a regular winner on the show circuit.
Carol moved to Florida 27 years ago and she began work at SunTrust Bank as a trust portfolio manager. She retired from banking and was looking for volunteer work with horses when she found Equestrian Inc. She feels a fulfillment when working with the horses at Equestrian Inc., and loves to see the wonderful change that comes over the horses when they arrive at the farm. Some experience, for the first time, a sense of calm and peace that had been missing in their lives. She states that “It’s truly the most gratifying feeling to watch them finally realize they are safe and loved.”
Rob Cavanaugh is originally from Stoughton, MA. He received his B.S. in Accounting from Saint Leo University and was also a member of the men’s lacrosse team. He joined Equestrian Inc. in 2015 having limited horse experience. While Rob doesn’t spend as much time in the barn, his knowledge of accounting and finance has proven to be very beneficial for Equestrian Inc. He also enjoys bonding with our thirty-year-old Appaloosa gelding, Lucky. Rob currently works at Power Design Inc. as a financial analyst.
Nancy had a fondness for horses (and all animals) since she can remember and it was solidified after attending Circle F Dude Ranch and Camp Keystone as a child. And her first horse, Sanzibar introduced the English riding discipline which she has loved ever since. Her rescuing efforts of animals started in 2006 volunteering and fostering for Abandoned Pet Rescue in Ft. Lauderdale and Pet Rescue by Judy in Orlando. After moving to Tampa she also wanted to focus on rescuing horses and fortunately found Equestrian Inc. Learning of the plight faced by OTTBs she has a new found passion for this magnificent horse.
Nancy attended the University of Florida and has spent her career selling Enterprise Technology Solutions, and currently works for Dell EMC.
